Welcome to 2nd Grade!
Welcome to our second grade classroom! Second grade is an exciting and demanding year of growth and learning for children. They will be expanding their knowledge of the skills they acquired in first grade. This is the year children strengthen their reading abilities and become fluent readers. They will be independent and responsible for their daily routines. Please discuss your child's day with them and encourage them to take ownership of their learning, behavior, and homework.
Please check your child's daily folder each day for important information from the school, information from the classroom, how your child is doing, and ways you can help at home. Continue to practice sight words, reading, writing words, and writing sentences. Help your child practice and master their weekly spelling words. The spelling words are chosen by the phonics skill we are studying in the classroom. It is crucial that each child be able to hear the sounds in a word and write the letters those sounds represent on paper. Hearing sounds in words is the best predictor of future reading success. Read, read, read and read some more!!! Time spent reading together and writing stories is never wasted.
THE MORE YOU READ... THE SMARTER YOU GET!!

Homework time is an excellent opportunity to practice and master skills learned in the classroom. Help your child become an independent learner by providing the time and resources to complete homework. Daily homework assignments will include spelling practice, math practice, and nightly reading. Please check your child's homework folder and book bag each day for assignments
I appreciate all you do to ensure your child's success in school and thank you for your involvement! You and I teaming up together is a crucial link in your child's total success in learning.
Please contact me any time by phone or e-mail with any questions or concerns you may have.
